Traffic and Transportation Information:

 

Drivers must stop and yield to pedestrians  crossing streets within marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections. This state law (passed in 1996) pertains to intersections, marked and unmarked, where illustration here there are not traffic controls in place.

Drivers are reminded to:

  • Be in control of your vehicle at all times.
  • Watch for pedestrian traffic while approaching an intersection.
  • Prepare to stop if a pedestrian is also approaching the intersection
  • STOP if pedestrians are in the crosswalk.
  • Proceed with caution once the pedestrian has crossed in front of your vehicle

Pedestrians are reminded to:

  • Refrain from entering a crosswalk if a vehicle is approaching at a distance or speed that will not allow the driver to stop safely.
  • Be aware that the law does not allow pedestrians to cross without personal responsibility for their own safety.
  • Follow all traffic control signals and devices that are in place.
  • Cross the street only at intersections.

Anyone violating the law is guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to 90 days in jail, a $700 fine or both.  A second violation within one year is a gross misdemeanor punishable by not more that one year in jail, a $3,000 fine or both.

Illegally Stored Vehicles (651-266-8989) - All vehicles must be parked on a paved or gravel surface or have a site plan (approved by the city) to become a paved surface.  Call the City’s Information and Complaint Office if you think there is an illegally stored vehicle near you.  If you feel your complaint is not being taken seriously, call the Summit Hill Office and we will be happy to assist you.  (222-1222)

Illegally Parked Vehicles (651-291-1111) (Police non-emergency) - Vehicles parked on the street must be moved evey 48 hours and must be parked as shown in the diagram below or a tag can be issued.  Call the police at 291-1111 and a police or parking enforcement officer will respond.  Be sure to report the license number and a description of the vehicle (make, model, color and year) and give exact location (i.e. “in front of 790 Main Street” or “on the corner of 12th St. and Main”).

Drivers’ Licenses
If you are new to the state of Minnesota, you will need to renew your driver’s license. You will need your old driver’s license and proof of residency, i.e. a utility bill with current address or some other verification of where you live.  You may call 651-296-6911 to get the address of the License Bureau nearest your home or workplace.

You can obtain license plates at the Sears store on the second floor.  Sears is located on Rice Street just west of  the State Capitol.  You will need to bring the title for the car,  your driver’s license, proof of insurance and current registration for your car.

Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC):  Now that you’re in the heart of the city, consider doing your bit for the environment and ride the bus.  There are three bus lines that run in or near the Summit Hill neighborhood, numbers 63, 70 and 84. Bus schedules for routes #70 and 63 are available on the table outside the Summit Hill Association office in the Linwood Community Center and on the MTC website at http://www.metrotransit.org/serviceInfo/findRoutes.asp.  If you need further information about other routes or how to use the system, call 612-373-3333.

  • #63 bus route: St. Thomas University, down Grand Avenue to downtown and beyond to McKnight Rd and Sunray Shopping Center
  • #70 bus route: Highland (Ford Parkway) down St. Clair Avenue to downtown and beyond to McKnight/3M center.
  • #84 bus route: Highland (Ford Parkway) to Snelling and all the way out Snelling to Rosedale.
