Environment & Beautification Committee

Committee Goal:

The SHA Environment Committee works to promote greater environmental awareness and increased citizen participation.  The group meets every other month, projects are mainly volunteer-interest driven and have included:  promoting recycling, composting & waste reduction; free workshops on rain gardens, rain barrels, home energy efficiency; greening projects along Grand Avenue; advocacy of alternative transportation (HourCar, biking, etc); assisting with the Annual Neighborhood Cleanup; and maintenance of the Sam Morgan Native Prairie & Linwood Raingarden.  New ideas are welcome, this groups is a great way to meet neighbors and make a difference!

  • 1997 Installed underground watering system for maintainence of Linwood Park upper gardens
  • 1998 Established the Sam Morgan Prairie at Linwood Park
  • 1998-2004 Coordinated Collaborative Project with City for Boulevard Tree Stump Removal
  • *Coordinate Annual Spring Neighborhood Clean Up
  • *Promote weekly Eureka curbside recycling
  • *Organize Annual Spring Plant Exchange
  • April 2007 Sam Morgan Prairie restoration burn and Sept. Replanting Project
  • 2009 Raingarden Workshop
  • 2009 Collaborative transportation project with Grand Ave. Business Association to install over 100 bike racks at 15 Grand Avenue locations.
  • 2009/10 Collaborative Creation of Linwood Rain Garden with City and Watershed District
  • April 2010 Sam Morgan Prairie restoration burn
  • *Promote neighborhood environmental stewardship through new “green” column in The Summit newsletter
  • 2010 Fundraising and Establishment of the HOURCAR hub at Grand & Victoria
  • *Continued Maintenance of Linwood Gardens, Rain Garden and Sam Morgan Prairie
  • Oct. 2011 Creation of Raingarden Interpretive Poster for Linwood

Future Projects:

  • Exploring Creation of a Summit Hill Community Garden at Linwood Park
  • Work with Grand Avenue Business Association to promote reducing/recycling on Grand Avenue
  • Planning quarterly public information sessions on environmental issues: i.e.: All About Plastics Workshop, etc.
  • Promoting the successful expansion and regeneration of the Sam Morgan Prairie at Linwood Rec Center
