Snow Emergency Information

St. Paul declares Snow Emergencies after snowfalls of 3″ or more OR an accumulation of 3″ of snow over several days. All streets are either Night Plow Routes or Day Plow Routes. Night Plow Routes have red and white plowing signs as illustrated below. Day Plow Routes do not have plowing signs.

Night Plowing

Day Plowing

Day Plow Routes Have No Signs

When: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the night a Snow Emergency is declared
Where: The busy streets – marked with signs that say NIGHT PLOW ROUTE plus one side of north-south residential streets with signs that say NIGHT PLOW ROUTE THIS SIDE OF STREET.
When: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and normally following night plowing.
Where: East-west residential streets plus one side of north-south residential streets — the side WITHOUT night plowing signs.

Note: There are some exceptions to these rules. They are well marked. When these routes are being plowed parking is banned until snow is plowed all the way to the curb.

To find out if a Snow Emergency is in effect, listen to the radio, watch TV and newspapers and ask your neighbors – or call 266-PLOW (266-7569) the 24-hour snowplowing information line. If you have a home computer and an e-mail address, Public Works will notify you directly via e-mail when a snow emergency has been declared. You can then pass the word along to your friends and neighbors. If you would like to be added to the Public Works notification list, send you e-mail address to SnowAlert.

  • AVOID A TICKET AND A TOW! The fine for illegal parking is $45. Your car can be towed, resulting in substantial towing and storage fees.
  • Snow Birds – Call 651-292-6603 for information on ticketing cars during snow emergencies.
  • Unshoveled Sidewalks (651-266-8989) – The law says property owners must clear their sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall.
